Blood tests can tell us that inflammation is present in the body, but they cannot show exactly where it is or how much joint or bone change has occurred. Imaging answers those questions — showing which joints are affected, whether there is active inflammation, and whether any structural damage has developed. Together, blood tests and imaging give your specialist a much fuller and more accurate picture than either can alone.
Not at all. Ordinary X-rays are very good at showing damage that has already developed, but in early inflammatory arthritis they can look completely normal even while a joint is actively inflamed. More sensitive scans such as ultrasound or MRI can often detect this early inflammation, which is exactly why your specialist may recommend them when symptoms persist despite a normal X-ray.

The scan, combined with a fracture-risk assessment, helps your team protect your bone health before a problem arises.
These tests are chosen with your safety in mind. Ultrasound and MRI use no ionising radiation at all, while X-ray and DEXA use only very low doses. Our specialists recommend imaging only when it will genuinely add useful information to your care, and always aim for the least invasive, lowest-dose option that answers the question.
